WWWW - Warrior Winter Warmer Weekend - 24/25 Jan 2009

Preliminary details

Day 1, Sat 24th - Short Race: New area at Grizedale

Day 2, Sun 25th- Warrior O Trial: Blawith and Subberthwaite, Coniston

The 2009 Winter Warmer is on the fourth weekend after New Year, with a suitable combination of short and long races to get your season under way. Both races use normal orienteering maps.


Day 1 - Short Race - Grizedale

Excellent new forest area in Grizedale, above Esthwaite. Map 1:10,000. Courses 5 km and 3 km. Suitable for all abilities, although white/yellow standard juniors will need accompanying. Open starts between 11.30 and 1.00pm Cost £4 / £2. EOD only.


Day 2 - Warrior O Trial, Blawith

Held this year on Blawith Common, on the west side of Coniston lake. (photo above, map segment below), maps 1:15,0000 and 1:10,000.

This is an arduous event with plenty of climb and varied terrain, always strenuous and often technical. Not suitable for novices. Full winter running gear (waterproof jacket with hood, waterproof trousers, hat, gloves) and emergency rations required. Whistle required. Courses as follows:

  • Long - 16 km / 900 m (over 18's only)
  • Medium - 12 km / 700 m
  • Short - 7 km / 500 m
  • Super short - 4.5 km / 300 m

There will also be a tiny course of around 1.5km for kids, around the final controls - but they will need accompanying and expect fast incoming runners focussed on finishing...

Starts between 9.30 and 10.30 - start and finish next to car park.

Cost £6 / £3. Expect the usual free donuts and sticky toffee pudding prizes. Free parking. Full details prior to the event.
